I Speak a Little Chinese (我会说一点汉语)

Now that you have some basic HSK 2 level words in your vocabulary it’s time for you to practice speaking with Chinese people you run into on the street, at a coffee shop, or at a local Chinese restaurant. In Chinese culture it’s polite to be modest. Start a conversation by saying 你好 (nǐ hǎo) or 早上好 (zǎoshang hǎo) or 晚上好 (wǎnshàng hǎo), depending on the time of day and what you’re comfortable with.

美国人：你好 (早上好, 晚上好） {Play}

中国人：你会说汉语吗？ {Play}

美国人：我会说一点汉语。 {Play}

中国人：你的汉语很好！ {Play}

美国人：谢谢！我的汉语不好。我认识三百个汉字。 {Play}

美国人：对不起，我不懂你说什么。今天天气很好，对吗？ {Play}

中国人：是的，今天天气很好。你喜欢这天气吗？ {Play}

Měiguó rén: Nǐ hǎo (zǎoshang hǎo, wǎnshang hǎo)

American: Hello (Good morning, Good evening)

Zhōngguó rén: Nǐ huì shuō Hànyǔ ma?

Chinese: Can you speak Chinese?

美国人：我会说一点汉语。 {Play}

Měiguó rén: Wǒ huì shuō yīdiǎn Hànyǔ.

American: I can speak a little Chinese.

中国人：你的汉语很好！ {Play}

Zhōngguó rén: Nǐ de Hànyǔ hěn hǎo!

Chinese: Your Chinese is very good!

美国人：谢谢！我的汉语不好。我认识三百个汉字。 {Play}

Měiguó rén: Xièxiè! Wǒ de Hànyǔ bù hǎo. Wǒ rènshí sānbǎi gè hànzì.

American: Thank you! My Chinese is not good. I know 300 Chinese characters.

中国人：很好！你学了多长时间？ {Play}

Zhōngguó rén: Hěn hǎo! Nǐ xué le duō cháng shíjiān?

Chinese: Very good! How long have you been studying?

美国人：对不起，我不懂你说什么。今天天气很好，对吗？ {Play}

Měiguó rén: Duìbùqǐ, wǒ bù dǒng nǐ shuō shénme. Jīntiān tiānqì hěn hǎo, duì ma?

American: I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you said. The weather is nice today, right?

中国人：是的，今天天气很好。你喜欢这天气吗？ {Play}

Zhōngguó rén: Shì de, jīntiān tiānqì hěn hǎo. Nǐ xǐhuān zhè tiānqì ma?

Chinese: Yes, the weather is very nice today. Do you like this weather?

美国人：你说得太快了。请说慢一点。 {Play}

Měiguó rén: Nǐ shuō de tài kuài le. Qǐng shuō màn yīdiǎn.

American: You speak too fast. Please speak more slowly.

中国人：是的，今天天气很好。你喜欢这天气吗？ {Play}

Zhōngguó rén: Shì de, jīntiān tiānqì hěn hǎo. Nǐ xǐhuān zhè tiānqì ma?

Chinese: Yes, the weather is very nice today. Do you like this weather?

美国人：对，对，对，我喜欢。很高兴认识你，再见！ {Play}

Měiguó rén: Duì, duì, duì, wǒ xǐhuān. Hěn gāoxìng rènshí nǐ, zàijiàn!

American: Yes, yes, yes, I like it. Nice to meet you, goodbye!
